Beliefs First Session

Beliefs are the most important part of the Burning Empires system. They are not static and should change frequently throughout the campaign. Here are the characters Beliefs at the start of the first session. For the player characters, the NPC beliefs that oppose theirs are noted.

Little Val
  • The planet Ibis should be devoted to study and self-betterment, not acting as a haven of corruption and murderous vices. If I can only find the semi-legendary blackmarket “kingpin,” Hafdan of Rook, I can topple the rumoured criminal network behind all this and make the planet safe for academics again.
    OPPOSED Amber 2
  • The Fire Seeker has been blocking Jurek Reyner’s plans for reform for too long. I will need to get Amber von Peregrine and that great Mistress of War, Clementine, on my side if I’m to convince that old fool that issues like the illicit SSF (Sensory Snuff Tape) trade are more pressing than the overhyped Vaylen Threat.
    OPPOSED Amber 2
  • I owe it to my family to live down my sister’s tarnished memory and get Pallas Sophia University re-accredited at this year’s inspection by the emperor, before the Asgard Mundis Humanitas Ordained Learning Center (AMHOLC) can buy out our charter. Jurek, “The Last Honest Bureaucrat,” my staunch friend, will surely help me.
    OPPOSED Fire Seeker 1
Brunhild Von Peregrine-Ferrishold
  • Psychology is Mankind’s greatest achievement. I will make the Ordo Corvisar the sole Psychological authority of Ibis.
    OPPOSED Tranic 1
  • My mother is the future of Ibis. I will see her replace Prince Isenbard.
    OPPOSED Jurek 1
    OPPOSED Fire Seeker 3
    OPPOSED Amber 1
  • Inquisitor Aoalbjorn is the very example of Psychology’s misuse. I will expose him as a traitor to the interests of Ibis.
    OPPOSED Fire Seeker 3
Barnes
  • The steps to being called “Your Lordship” are many and varied. I will offer incriminating evidence on Hafdan to Little Val in exchange for an invitation to the welcoming party for Emperor Tirkahn.
    OPPOSED Amber 2
    OPPOSED Gooch 1
  • Nobles always feel better about a transaction when they think they initiated it. I will find a noble that needs cargo moved discretely and present an opportunity for them to meet me.
    OPPOSED Jurek 1
  • I have not talked to (notable) of (cult) recently. Surely they have some needs I can help them with.
    OPPOSED Fire Seeker 2
Clementine Church
  • Keep Hafdan of Rook in power to preserve the black market I worked so hard to establish.
    OPPOSED Hafdan 2
  • I must conscript an army of Mukhadish before the Mundis Hamanatis does.
    OPPOSED Gooch 2
  • The Vaylen threat is really a ploy by the Mundis Humanatis to replace all of the universe with willing slaves to their dogma, and I will expose their plot by taking down their golden boy Inquisitor Bjorven.
    OPPOSED Jurek 3
Amber Von Peregrine
  • Ibis will only be a great asset to my clan if it is taken in secret. I will work to maintain the status quo on Ibis as long as possible.
  • We must have a thriving black market open to accomplish our objectives. I must protect Hafdan of Rook from others and himself.
  • Psychology is my greatest threat. I need to find the right lever to manipulate a Psychologist to my side.
Duke Jurek Reynar
  • Ibis should be under Imperial Stewardship – it is too valuable a strategic Karsan League asset to leave as a Noble Fief. I will oversee a peaceful transition from Prince Isembard’s rule to mine as Lord Steward.
  • Regulation on Ibis is too loose, especially with the Emperor’s pending visit. I will expose a corrupt noble to demonstrate the need for tighter regulation.
  • Clementine is a dangerous fanatic. I will expose her over-zealous persecution of Mundus Humanitas for what it is – a fever dream to increase her own power base.
Inquisitor Aöalbjorn Panzer Bjorven
  • AMHOLC is the hammer needed to deal with wayward universities and protect the greatest asset of Ibis. I will make an example of Pallas Sophia and the corruption Big Val spread through her wicked cult.
  • The Cult Churches are a bed of smuggling that weaken Ibis and make space for the worm to slip in. I will purge Ibis of this sickness, first by exposing them and their smuggling networks.
  • Prince Isembard is the rightful ruler of Ibis and a devout follower of the Prophet. I will do all I can to protect his rule.
Gooch
  • Blokes like Barnes got bidness mixin’ wit nobles. Gooch keep Barnes outta da ball.
  • Wild Mukhadish oughta be let be. Got keep eyes out for dem.
  • If you don’t settle scores, smart blokes get dumb. Gooch gotta settle up wit Victor Kempler fer pushin’ Gooch out. Beatin’ oughta do.
Tranic Von Loor
  • Only through the teachings of Ahmilak can Psychology be used without sin. I will prevent the Ordo Corvisar from corrupting the pure Psychologists of the Circle of 10,000.
  • Clementine is adrift on the River of Fire. I will show her the true path by challenging her troops to fist fights.
  • The Fire Seeker will show me the true path. I will prove my worth to Inquisitor Bjorven by recruiting another Lord-Pilot to our cause.
Hafdan of Rook
  • Ibis is ripe for the plucking. I will expand the black market here and increase the influence of the Collectors.
  • The past is the past. I need to get out from under Clementine’s shadow by taking her down a peg with the Family.
  • The Family hates that over-zealous Little Val. I’ll put him in the ground and make my mark.
  • Life Under a Different Code – Hulling people turns enemies into grateful friends. I need to find a doctor to help me use this canister of worms.
